Respiratory Therapists are healthcare professionals who specialize in the care of patients with breathing difficulties. They work in Intensive Care Units (ICU), Pulmonary Function lab, and Sleep Labs to assess, diagnose and treat patients with wide range of respiratory conditions like COVID-19, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Pneumonia, Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and sleep disorders. Respiratory Therapists play a critical role in the management of patients on Mechanical Ventilators admitted to ICU.
"In Alexandra hospital, I work with my friends as professionals."
A well-balanced work and life is only achievable when your colleagues are like your extended family. They have been very supportive and provided me with constant encouragement and mentorship.
Receiving handovers from my night shift colleagues is the first thing I do when I start my shift. Through the handover, I would be informed of patients that have been admitted to ICU and the General Wards and are receiving breathing support. Thereafter, I assess the patients for their breathing status, listening to their lungs and adjusting their breathing support accordingly. A significant portion of my day involves monitoring patient vital signs including oxygen saturation and respiratory rate on ventilator and assisting in stabilising new patients. Throughout the day, I respond to emergency situations such as sudden cardiac arrest and respiratory distress that require artificial ventilatory support.
I contribute to the broader health care system through collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals day-to-day ensuring patients receive comprehensive and coordinated care. During multidisciplinary ICU rounds, we work together to discuss patient's status and plans.
I am proud of how our work has positively impacted on our patient's breathing capacity, oxygen levels, and overall quality of life. When we see our patients regain their independence and return to their daily activities, the feeling of satisfaction is indescribable as we remember they were once confined to their beds due to illness. Other than physical improvements, we also provide emotional and psychological support to patients that experience fear, anxiety, and isolation during their stay with us. We will educate our patients about their condition, empowering them to take an active role in their health and fostering new hope and resilience. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in research and educational activities in advancing the field of Respiratory Therapy and improving the standards of care for patients.
