The AH Department of Laboratory Medicine is staffed by highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientists responsible for performing analysis of biological specimens to generate laboratory results that aid diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. The AH Laboratory provides the following disciplines: Blood Transfusion Service, Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Point of Care testing. The laboratory is College of American Pathologist (CAP) accredited, and is committed in delivering reliable, timely and accurate laboratory results.
"My experience at Alex has been an enriching journey. Not only was I sponsored by Alex to study abroad, but I am also fortunate to have a network of supportive colleagues that I can rely on during challenging times. I take great pride in the inclusive and respectful working environment that Alex has cultivated, where I am valued, treated fairly, and encouraged to voice my thoughts without fear".
As a medical laboratory scientist, a typical day for me at work will be performing various laboratory tests on patient's samples. This can include Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Blood Bank analysis. These tests are carried out by following specific protocols and using specialised equipment. I also perform daily maintenance of these equipment as well as calibrations and quality control checks to verify the accuracy and precision of the tests. A part of my daily routine also includes validation of test results and looking out for any abnormality to ensure that the results are accurate for proper diagnosis and patient care. During the investigation of any abnormal findings, I may repeat the tests, assess possible errors, or consult with clinical pathologist. After result validation, doctors will then be able to view the test reports in the hospital laboratory information system and make informed decisions about patient care. For critical results, I will also notify doctors so that they can make prompt patient management decisions. Apart from the routine laboratory test analysis, my work also involves maintaining of laboratory accreditation and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards through regular audits and quality assurance programs. In addition, I participate in continuing education and training programs to stay up to date with the latest developments in laboratory medicine and technology.
Performing a wide range of diagnostic tests, from blood tests to microbiological cultures is important because the right diagnosis is the first step in providing appropriate treatment plans, medication choices, and surgical interventions for patients. In addition to diagnosing diseases, the screening tests help to identify risk factors and early indicators of diseases which allows for early intervention and prevention. The routine tests and result reporting also help doctors to track disease progression and treatment effectiveness, especially for patients with chronic conditions. Laboratory tests that involve identifying pathogens also play a crucial role in managing outbreak, infection control, and public health surveillance. For example, in Alex, we perform dengue test and report positive cases to MOH daily. The data generated enables identification of trends and pattern in disease transmission and thus contributes to public health surveillance.
My work requires me to follow strict protocols including quality control and assurance measures which minimize errors and reduce any risks of misdiagnosis. The accuracy and quality of laboratory testing of patients' samples is essential to safeguard patient safety. Aside from my frontline duties, I am also involved in training and educating laboratory staffs and interns from tertiary schools. These engagements allow me to share my knowledge, expertise and best practices that would be beneficial to the overall healthcare environment.
